For Paul and everyone in the family, I am very sorry to learn of the loss of your father. It has brought back fond memories of interesting times. He had a delightful interest in building special cat toys, and I have the spice rack that he made for me. He was the only father in law I will ever have, and I appreciated him.

It is a long story as to why and how I am just learning of your loss but my feelings for you and Werner are most sincere.  I always enjoyed Werner picking you up from the office and hearing the verbal bantering that was so much a part of the love you shared for each other. His humor, his quick wit, his smile, and the way he looked at you are something that will always survive in my memory and in the memories of those who knew you both.  I am so sorry I was not aware and therefore not able to lend support, share a fond memory, and maybe a laugh when you needed it most.  I am so sorry for your loss of this unforgetable man...

Not long after I began working at Martin Marietta labs in 1979, Werner was standing by my library desk when a young intern came up to ask him a question, and they both disappeared into the conference room next door. About 2 hours later, when neither of them had reappeared, I peeked in to see that Werner had filled every available inch of all the chalk boards with calculus formulas, and was happily chattering away about the initial question - to the dismay of the, now very glassy eyed, intern.

Aside from the constant cigarette/cigar ash that he so generously shared with all of us, Werner was also known for his famous, practically liquid, Christmas cake. The entire building became suffused with the smell of booze the moment he walked into the lobby with it every year.  One spoonful (no good trying to use a fork) was enough to make your head spin, but it heralded the start of the holidays. 

Werner you were indeed unique, and will be sorely missed by everyone who had the joy of knowing you.

There was a typical very late night meeting with George Morgenthaler in Ken Jarmolow's office and Werner happened to look in.  Ken looked at Werner and asked, "Werner, how did you manage to spill coffee --- down the back of your shirt?"  Werner's brilliance, sense of humor, and foibles will be missed.

A brilliant mind, coupled with a keen sense of humor, witty poems, equations on the blackboard, ink stains on his shirt, cigar ashes everywhere, his slogan of "Furth things first"...just remembering his name brings a smile to your face.  He was loved and admired by all he encountered.  Worked with Werner for 30 years at The Labs...

Werner was a very good engineer and mathematician. 
Prior to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik in October 1957, only astronomers and mathematicians had a deep understanding of orbital mechanics. With the advent of the space age, Werner became deeply involved in Martin Marietta's Baltimore division advanced projects effort.  He helped compute orbital parameters and trajectories to achieve: unique low earth obits; orbits that returned spacecraft above the same location and at the same time each day; synchronous orbits for communication, weather an intelligence (spy) satellites; and trajectories to the moon and planets. All this at a time when few people thought such missions were possible.
Werner took a very systematic approach to everything he did, both at the office and at home. His technical discussions sometimes took an unexpected turn due to his wit and and dry humor. 
Our professional and social association spans nearly 50 years.  
I will miss him.

Mary:  Believe it or not, I was thinking of Werner a couple of days ago.  I came across the recipe he gave me for crab cakes many years ago, when you guys came up for Thanksgiving.  We all had such good times together.  He was a fun guy and when you two were around, everyone was happy.  We are sad but appreciative.  We hope you get lots of hugs.  We are huggers in spririt.
