George Houston Garner, age 74, passed away September 17, 2022 at the VA Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Houston was born on April 16, 1948 in Sherwood, Tennessee to Clyde and Jimmie Garner. He graduated from Franklin County High School in Winchester, Tennessee in 1966. Houston served our country in the United States Army from 1966-1976. During that time he served two 13-month tours in Korea. He went on to receive his Bachelor of Science in Education in May, 1984 and Master of Science in Education in August, 1991 both from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri. He retired from the Kansas City School District in 2008. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed watching sports and reading.
Houston married Rebecca Allman in 1979, and they had two children Mary (John) Bunting of Amana, IA and Andrew (Mary) Garner of Columbia, MO.
Houston is preceded in death by his wife Rebecca and parents Clyde and Jimmie Garner. He is survived by his daughter Mary (John) Bunting; son Andrew (Mary) Garner; 4 grandchildren, Bradley, Jacob, Mason and Noah and great-grandson Hayden; and 2 siblings Lori (Kevin) Thompson and Chris (Michelle) Garner.
A visitation for Houston will be held Friday, September 23, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at McGilley & George Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 611 Chestnut, Belton, MO 64012. A funeral will occur Friday, September 23, 2022 at 11:30 AM at the funeral home and burial will follow on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 12:15 PM at the Belton Cemetery, 710 S. Scott, Belton, MO 64012.
