Lynn Robert Erb, lovingly known as "Lynn Bobby" and "Papa Lynn," passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, in Hernando, Florida, at the age of 85. Born on September 3, 1940, in Delton, Michigan, Lynn lived a life full of passion, hard work, and love that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Lynn graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1959 and pursued ongoing education throughout his life to support his career. His remarkable work ethic began early, starting at just 14 years old when he worked at Dick Roads Mobile Gas Station in Kalamazoo. Over the years, Lynn built a distinguished career in the automotive and trucking industry. He worked for Mack Trucks in Dearborn, where he quickly rose to shop foreman and later moved into management roles for various companies. Eventually, he became the Maintenance Supervisor for CF's facility and fleet. In 1983, Lynn retired to Florida and founded Florida Fleet and Diesel, a business he successfully ran until selling it to retire once more. However, true to his nature, Lynn couldn’t stay idle for long; he continued working well into his 70s as a truck driver for a dear friend before finally retiring in 2008. Even in retirement, his love for work and staying active never waned.
Lynn married Sherry Ann Andrews, the love of his life in 1962. Although their marriage ended after 21 years, their bond endured as they remained close friends who cared deeply for one another throughout their lives. Together, they raised three children: Debra Erb Legantano (James Legantano), Jeffrey L. Erb, and Chad A. Erb (Julia Erb). Lynn was also a proud grandfather to four grandchildren—Ashley Nicole (Jeff), Amber Jacqueline (Deb), Randall Lee (Chad), and Jacob Isaac (Chad)—and two great-grandchildren, Nora and Miles (Amber). His family brought him immense joy and pride.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Llewellyn and Lavera Erb; his brothers Lamar Erb and Lloyd Erb; and his nephew William "Billy" Erb. While their loss was deeply felt during his lifetime, there is comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
A man of many talents and passions, Lynn was known for his quick wit, intelligence, and zest for life. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Clockers Car Club in his youth and had a reputation for his fast driving skills behind the wheel of his beloved 1940 Ford. A master diesel mechanic with an unmatched ability to build engines, Lynn’s passion for hot rods, big motors, and NASCAR remained constant throughout his life. He also loved to dance—so much so that ladies would line up on the dance floor just to share a moment with him—and was an avid reader who devoured books with enthusiasm.
Lynn’s faith was an integral part of his life. Baptized at the Methodist Church in Washington Square Kalamazoo during his youth, he carried a personal relationship with Christ throughout his journey.
To those who knew him best, Lynn was more than just a father or friend; he was a hero. As expressed by his son Jeffrey: "My father was truly my hero—an oak tree of strength who was always there for me without fail. He was my best friend throughout my entire life. I was truly blessed to be his son."
Lynn’s legacy is one of love, laughter, hard work, and unwavering devotion to those he held dear. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends.
May Lynn Robert Erb rest in eternal peace as those who loved him carry forward the lessons and joy he brought into their lives. A Memorial Gathering will be held on September 21-24th, 2026 Gathering will be held in Kalamazoo.
