
Annie Belle Avery born Annie Robinson, was a native of Louisiana. She attended the New Orleans school system and she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and then later pursued a career in real-estate working with the First time homebuyers association. In 1956, Annie married James Avery Jr and from this union their two sons Eric and Calvin were born. Annie was a person who loved being a part of change in her community. During her life she was the Chairwoman/ Director of the Cresent City Peace Alliance, the director of the African American Heritage Preservation council of the PRC where she was named Preservationist of the year in 1997. Annie also founded a womens' organization around 1993 called "Ladies in Red '' that highlighted women and their accomplishments. Annie was parishioner of Saint Monica Catholic Church in New Orleans, LA for many years before converting to the Christian faith. Over the years, Annie led a daily prayer line called “Lunch with Jesus” where she spoke passionately about her love for God. Through her ministry, she reached and prayed for people far and near. She would often say, “There isn't anything wrong with my mind, just my legs.” which meant there was still work for her to do. At the age of 80, Annie won the Ms. Alabama Nursing home pageant, and had the goal to continue to support and celebrate nursing home residents as much as she could. Annie Avery was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a community activist, a motivational speaker, and so much more. Annie was a true laborer of love. On the morning of October 21st 2022, Annie gained her heavenly wings and went home to be the Lord. Annie was known for sharing the love and peace of God with others. Annie will forever be remembered for her love and strength,her words of kindness, comfort and wisdom she shared with everyone she met. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, James AveryJr., her mother Latisha Worthy, step father Gilbert "Popeye" Worthy, and two brothers, Gilbert "Sonny" Worthy III and Willie Lee Robinson. She is survived by and left to continue her legacy by her son Calvin James Avery and devoted daughter in-law Tracy Avery and son Eric Adam Avery, four granddaughters, Mia(Kenneth) Canady, Cydney Avery, Ty(Derrick) Salvant, Niedra(Landon) Rhea, five grandsons, Calvin(Taeneka) Avery II, Tu'Juan (Tay'Quail) Rhea, Kenta Avery, Blake Avery, and Caden Avery, 22 great - grandchildren and 1 great- great grand and a host of sister friends, bonus daughters and sons.
A Celebration of Life for Annie will be held Saturday, November 5, 2022 with a visitation starting at 10:00 AM at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, followed by a memorial service starting at 11:00 AM.
