Mary Baker Patterson Smith age 89 departed this life at her home Saturday, July 13. Graveside Services will be Saturday July 20, 2013 at 2PM at Elmwood Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Malcolm D. Smith, Jr., Brother, Bunyan Patterson and sisters Rachel Lanier and Alice Pruitt. Baker and Malcolm's union produced one daughter, Lynne Goldsmith, to whom she devoted her entire life. Along with Lynne, her two sons Robert V. Goldsmith (wife Meredith, son Grayton) and David Peyton Goldsmith (Rebecca Kelley and daughter Olivia) remember their Mimi for her never failing support and encouragement. A lifelong golfer, Baker was a charter member of Altadena Valley Country Club. She was active in the Birmingham Junior Golf Association and a member of the Birmingham Golf Hall of Fame. Her last "hole in one" was just short of her 80th birthday. She spent countless hours teaching her grandsons the game and was certain she could have taught Malcolm to improve his swing had he not died at age 84. She faced cancer with the same tenacity she lived her life. Our Mimi has left a lifetime of happy memories for us.
