Born on July 21, 1931, in Florida, Betty dedicated her life to caring for others. She worked as a registered nurse for an incredible 49 years at South Highland Infirmary, where she spent 25 of those years in the nursery before transitioning to the hospital floor at South Highlands Hospital—later known as HealthSouth—for another 24 years. Her long and devoted career in nursing came to a close when she retired on December 31, 1999.
Beyond her professional life, Betty was deeply involved in her community. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, and La Femmes, along with numerous other organizations that reflected her commitment to service. She played an active role in the Central Park Athletic Association, supporting baseball and softball programs for several years. Additionally, she volunteered at Central Park Elementary School and served as a pack leader for the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America.
Family was at the heart of Betty’s life. She married Constantine "Gus" Sklivis on November 22, 1952, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Together they built a loving family. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth Sklivis of Central Park; Michael Sklivis of Hueytown; and Constance Sklivis Macks of Pleasant Grove. She also leaves behind six grandchildren—Crystal Brown, Christopher Brown, Amanda Sklivis, Amanda Taylor, Alexander Sklivis, and Breanna Macks Mickle—as well as sixteen great-grandchildren and three beloved great-grandpups.
Betty was a constant presence in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always offering support and encouragement. Her warmth extended beyond her family into the broader community where she became a cherished figure known for her generosity and dedication.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gus Sklivis, and her mother, Elizabeth Fancher.
Betty’s legacy is one of compassion and service—a life well-lived through caring for others both professionally and personally. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her.
