Bobby Nelson

He was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Velma Nelson, siblings WD and June, his wife Faye, sons Bruce and Chris. Survived by his daughters Mona Gray-Gurtis and Susan Whitmire (Bobby), grandchildren TR, Jalice (Chris), Hollye (Johnny), Cera (Jeremy), Patrick (Tifffany), Andrew and 11 great-grandchildren.

Graduate of Hewitt High School in 1956, first of four generations to do so. He worked his entire life to provide for this family. He started at American Bridge where he learned structural steel detailing and drafting. He then opened The Truss Company better known as Tru-Blu that operated in Trussville for nearly 50 years.

Grumpy was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed “Family Feast”, “Bacon Friday or Saturdays”, and family gatherings when there was going to be good food most of all. He loved to attend the sporting events, concerts, and recitals when one or more of the “kids” participated. Never said no to going on a trip with family, as long as a stop at Cracker Barrel was included.

He was a well-known and respected member of the community, actively involved in school recreation, sports and development. His dedication and presence made a lasting impact. His contributions helped shape experiences that many will remember for years to come.

Grumpy’s extensive stories, filled with humor, wisdom and unforgettable moments no matter how expansive those stories became will truly be missed by all. He brought people together sharing his knowledge and experiences that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

The family requests that you wear blue to his memorial service.

A visitation will be held on December 29, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, located at 1500 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, US. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the same location.

The committal service will take place at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens, located at 1591 Gadsden Hwy, Birmingham, AL 35235, US.
