

Darthula Hardie Hendrick Buck went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, February 24, 2019. Darthula Buck was born in Pensacola, FL on June 11, 1922, to Agnes Winchester Hendrick and Julius Leonard Hendrick. She had one brother, Thomas Winchester Hendrick, who lost his life in the Battle of the Bulge. Her family moved to Birmingham, AL in 1930, where they lived the rest of their lives.
She attended Ramsay High School, Randolph-Macon Women’s College, and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Sociology in June of 1944. While attending Randolph-Macon, she was a member of the Y. W. C. A. committee, the Glee Club, the Kappa Delta Sorority, and a reporter for the school newspaper. At the University of Alabama she was on the intramural debate team that- won the Capstone championship.
After college and marriage to Dr. Gray Carroll Buck, Jr., Darthula worked for the Red Cross and later became a hospital care worker with the Alabama Tumor Clinic, located in the Jefferson Hillman Hospital. She was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary and the Dogwood Garden Club.
The church was the center of her family’s lives since her childhood. As a devoted member of South Highland Presbyterian Church for eighty eight years, she taught children’s Sunday school classes, was an active member of the Presbyterian Women, and willingly gave of her time and talents to the church when any occasion arose.
Darthula Buck is survived by her three children: Dr. Gray Carroll Buck, III and his wife, Vicki; Thomas Winchester Hendrick Buck and his wife, Pam; Thula Buck Peterson and her husband, Mark; and her brother-in-law, Dr. William Pettus Buck and his wife, Janie. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren are: Shelley Buck Gardner and her husband, Nick (children-Libby and Gray); Amanda Buck Derrick and her husband, Paul (children- Hallie and Hannah Joe); Ashbey Buck Orman and her husband, Paul (daughter-Ella Gray);
Thomas Winchester Hendrick Buck, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn; John Alderman Buck; Hardie Smith Buck and his wife, Rachel (son-Smith); Grayson Elizabeth Davis; and Anna Davis Southern and her husband, Andrew. We are thankful for her life, her example of serving others, her dedication to family and friends, her unwavering love, her love for fun and games, and how she exemplified a humble faith in Christ. Her memorial service will be at South Highland Presbyterian Church Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00. We want to thank Pro Health Hospice and all of the people who so lovingly cared for our mother. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Frank A. Mathes Scholarship Fund at South Highland Presbyterian Church, Camp Winnataska, or the South Highland Center-Adult Day Care.
