Dominick “Don” Michael Caldarello, 83, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 22, 2023, in his home in Vestavia Hills, Alabama. Don was born the youngest of two children to Lena and Henry Caldarello in Birmingham, Alabama, on May 3, 1939. He attended Phillips high school working in a local music store before transitioning into the army. Upon honorable discharge, he landed a job as a machine tech at Photocopy Inc. and through hard work, dedication, and determination, progressed to President. With a strong entrepreneurial spirit and keen business sense, Don started his own successful business in his early 50s, Birmingham Mailing Systems. After retirement, he continued to explore new ventures through his windshield repair business, house renovating, and invention of the Alabama Houndstooth Shaker.
Don was blessed with a large loving Italian family and a strong Catholic faith. Sundays at his parents’ home meant mass and a big meal talking, laughing, and sharing. Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His children and grandchildren were the center beam of his life, and he gave everything a father could give. His words, lessons, and how he lived taught his children love and the skills to be successful throughout life. From his children, he was the best Pop in the world.
Through the years, Don enjoyed fixing anything and everything. If it was broken, Pop could fix it. He was an avid fisherman, a vintage automobile owner, had a passion for westerns, enjoyed the sounds of Martin, Sinatra, and Elvis, owner of stories about annual trips with his friends, and loved vacationing at the beach with family.
Pop lived life to the fullest, ready for any adventure. He was tough as nails with a heart of gold. Saying “I love you” with every departure. He never met a stranger and always protected the Familia. Full of laughter and love, he always had a story to tell, a song to sing, a way to make you smile. We love you so much and miss you dearly. See you sometime in your heavenly mansion.
He was preceded in death by his mom, Lena Larussa Caldarello, his dad, Henry Caldarello, and his sister Concetta Miller (Bernard).
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his children Lisa Caldarello Craig (Ronald), Andrew Michael Caldarello (Stephanie), his grandchildren Michael Anthony Caldarello, Dominick Henry Caldarello, Evan Wayne Caldarello, his children’s mother, Brenda Catherine Bethell, and many loving nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. with rosary at 2:00 p.m. and Funeral service at 2:30 p.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama, with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery.
