Doris was born in Birmingham on October 11, 1922. She lived there and in Hoover until recent years. She and her late husband, Buddy, moved to Roswell, GA, near their daughter in 2016. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1940 and married her sweetheart, “Buddy” Franklin in 1941. Though interrupted in part by the war years, she began her life as a devoted wife, loving mother and extraordinary homemaker for her family. She was a cherished friend to many. Doris was an active leader and member of Ensley Methodist Church and St. Mark Methodist Church, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and always her children’s school class “room mother”.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Ellington “Buddy” Franklin, parents, Floyd E. Day and Alma Oakley Day, brother, James E. Day, Sr. and daughter-in-law, Wendy Williams Franklin. Survivors include her son, Donald E. Franklin of Auburn, AL, daughter Kathy Franklin Greene (Bill) of Marietta, GA, brother Robert E. Day of Pell City, AL, grandchildren Chad Franklin, Melanie Franklin, Jason Greene (Katy), Taylor Greene (Kelsey), Michael Greene and eight great grandchildren. “Grandmama” loved her family with all of her heart. To a host of nieces and nephews, she was their beloved “Aunt Doris”, whose attention and encouragement could always be counted upon.
A graveside service for family members will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Doris’ honor may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2901 Columbiana Road, Vestavia Hills, AL 35216
