BURDINE, EDWIN, age 94 of Birmingham, passed away Friday, June 5, 2015. “Eddie”, as he was known to everyone, was born in Madison County, Alabama. His parents, Foster H. and Ruby Burdine, along with his sister, Ruth Chambers, preceded him in to Heaven. He is survived by Catherine Day Burdine, his wife of sixty seven years; their three children, Randy Burdine (Cathi), Cheryl Muglach and Kerry Burdine; four grandchildren, Ryan Burdine (Mandy), Michael Muglach (Tabitha), Amanda Gardner (Jeff) and Scott Burdine; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Eddie lived most of his life in Birmingham and graduated from Phillips High School. After graduation, he was employed by Southern Iron Works which later became known as O’Neal Steel, Inc. World War II broke out so he left O’Neal and joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served as a radioman on a “sub-chaser” in the Caribbean, the North Atlantic and the Pacific. Upon discharge, Eddie returned to O’Neal Steel until he retired in 1986. During these years he held many positions in accounting and management. He was devoted to his mentor, Mr. Kirkman O’Neal. He absolutely loved working for that fine company and has recounted many stories/tales concerning his years of service. He loved Alabama football even better (if that’s possible). On October 24, 1947 he married Catherine and their honeymoon trip was to Athens, GA to an Alabama football game. ROLL TIDE!!! Eddie was a happy man with a quick smile that was shown almost to the end of his life. He succumbed to cancer after a valiant fight with hardly a complaint about the pain he endured. The ladies and men of ALACARE provided eight months of care and compassion to both he and his family. Many thanks and admiration to all of them, but especially to Mrs. Linda Tawbush (nurse) who cared for him to the end as if he were a member of her own family. His family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 from 12-1 PM to celebrate his life with a service at 1 PM at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. Burial will follow at Jefferson Memorial Gardens. May God Bless all the lives touched by Mr. Edwin F. Burdine or Eddie as he was so lovingly known. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial gift to your own favorite charity or to South Roebuck Baptist Church, 701 Mountain Drive Birmingham, AL 35206 where Eddie served as a deacon and other positions.
