

Grace Hammond Thames, 104, Hueytown, AL, died Friday, February 14, 2014. She was the oldest of four children born to Leonard and Leo Bain on the 4th of July 1909, where she grew up Methodist in Pell City, Ala. She always said she was a city girl: “Pell City, that is.”
She learned to drive an automobile at age 14 and excelled in tennis in high school. After moving to Birmingham in her teens, she worked at Bromberg’s as a hostess where she met her husband, Percy T. Hammond, who passed away in 1968. Mrs. Thames is also predeceased by her husband Charlie B Thames; her son, Tillman Hammond; brothers Warren Bain, Derrell Bain and sister Virginia Jebeles.
She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Hammond Driskill (Johnny) of Indian Springs Village Ala.; grandchildren Mark Driskill of Hoover Ala.; Leigh Gomany (Ken) of Hoover Ala.; Sharon Rainey (Sam) of Hueytown Ala., Cinda Thompson (Frank) of Childersburg Ala.; Wade Hammond (Kathy) of Hoover Ala.; Dale Hammond (Frances) of South Carolina; six great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, special family friend Myra Hayes Sims of Palm Desert, California, and her faithful little cat, Mollie.
The family would like to thank Comfort Care Hospice and Frances Gosnell, Ashley Cole and Sheena Luster for their wonderful care for the past two months.
Graveside services will be held Monday, February 17 at 3:00 p.m., at Elmwood Cemetery with Rev. Doug O’Brien officiating. There will be a visitation from 2:00–3:00 p.m. at Johns-Ridout’s Elwood Chapel.
