Harrison Monroe Mewbourne, Jr. passed away Thursday, July 18th at St. Vincent’s East Hospital. He was 87 years old. Harry was born July 6, 1926 and raised in the Chalkville area. While serving in the U.S. Army AirCorp and stationed in Buffalo, NY, he met Rose E. Royce and was later married on May 18, 1948. To this union they added one daughter and five sons. Harry made his official living as a mechanic, but there wasn’t anything he couldn’t repair or do. He was a racing enthusiast. He drove as well as owned several race cars and was a charter member of the Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers and is also in the Alabama Auto Racing Pioneers Hall of Fame. Harry was a licensed private pilot and an aviation mechanic. His hobby was working, his passion was helping others, but Rose and the kids were his love and his pride. Last Friday night at 10:35 PM Harry said goodbye to Rose, his wife of 65 years, his daughter and sons. The family will receive visitors from 12 noon to 1:00 PM, Monday, July 22, 2013 at Elmwood Chapel with funeral services following at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
