Herman Russell Jordan was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to all. He died peacefully on January 4, 2022 after facing many health issues with courage, strength, and a warm smile.
Herman was born in Myrtlewood, Alabama. As the youngest child of Coyt and Annie Lee Jordan, Herman dearly loved his brother, Coyt, and his sister, Madge. The Jordan family was rich in love, and Herman enjoyed relationships with his large family including special cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In March of 1963, Herman met the love of his life, Phyllis, and they were married in November of the same year. Herman and Phyllis were married for 58 years, and they enjoyed many happy times. They had one daughter, Jan Curtis, whom he loved very much. Herman was fond of animals, and they had several special dogs, a wonderful cat, and even a peacock! Phyllis and Jan never knew what animal Herman might rescue next!
Herman welcomed Billy as his son-in-law, and he enjoyed spending time with Billy hunting and being outside. Herman’s pride and joy were his three grandsons, Will, Wes, and Jordan Curtis. He loved taking them for a ride in his beloved 1977 Jeep, teaching them to drive a tractor, taking them on trips, and offering a five dollar bill to each of them often. As they grew, he insisted on giving them “a little gas money” and was thrilled to see them drive into the driveway at his home.
Herman spent his career working for Martha White Foods, and he never met a stranger. His kindness drew people to him, and he enjoyed talking to people and hearing about their lives. He shared his faith boldly, and he led many people to Christ. He felt called to bring others to His Savior. Herman and Phyllis were members of Trussville First United Methodist Church for many years, where Herman was a longtime member of the Chancel Choir and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He treasured the friendships that were made at his church.
Herman’s life will be celebrated Friday, January 7 at Trussville First United Methodist Church. The family will visit with friends and family from 9:30 until 11:00, and the service will begin at 11:00. Memorials may be given to Trussville First United Methodist Church.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ridoutstrussvillechapel.com for the Jordan family.
