

He was born on June 27, 1930 to Hugh Dana and Dallas Marie Gross in Pruden, TN. He graduated from Jellico High School where he played football. He served his country in the Navy where he fought in the Korean war. He graduated from East Tennessee State University where he met and married his college sweetheart Barbara Chaniott Gross. They had three children Amy Gross Baker (Jack) and twins David Dana Gross (Regina) and Jennifer Gross Taylor (Bob). He is survived by his six grandchildren Jeff Baker (Heidi), Jenny Gray (Sonny), Sarah Magee (Clay), Zachary Taylor, Ana Gross, and Chris Taylor (Ashley). He is also survived by his nine loving great grandchildren Elizabeth Gray, Natalie Gray, Buck Gray, Millie Gray, Jack Baker, Bo Baker, Eleanor Baker, Ann Reece Magee, and Stella Magee, all of whom called him Pop.
Hugh worked for the Clinchfield Railroad in Erwin, TN and for the Seaboard Coastline in Jacksonville, FL. He was a founding member of Southwestern Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN and a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL. When they retired to North Carolina, he served the Lord at the First Baptist Church of Hendersonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh Dana and Dallas Marie Gross, his sister Carolyn Gross McDaniel, and his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara .
Hugh loved God more than anything else and nothing brought him greater joy than being with his family. He would brag about his grandchildren and great grandchildren to anyone who would listen. He will be greatly missed!
A graveside service will be held Friday October 27, 2023 11:00 am at Forest Crest Cemetery for family and friends. A Celebration of Life service will be held November 22, 2023 11:00 am at Kirkwood By the River.
