

John Golden English (73), of Pleasant Grove, AL, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on April 10, 2017. John was born on June 6, 1943 in Pratt City, AL, the eldest son of James & Evelyn English. He graduated Ensley High School in 1961 and attended the University of Montevallo, studying accounting. On Jan 15, 1966, John married the former Sherry Marie Beane from Central Park, AL. John faithfully served his Country for 7 years as a Communications Specialist in the US Marine Corps Reserve, assigned to 4th Battalion, 14th Marines achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. John was employed by South Central Bell and Bell South, having retired after 38 years of service. He was actively engaged as a member and Treasurer for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Fairfield Lodge. John was a devoted son, brother, loving husband, father and grandfather. As a son, John devotedly looked after his parents in all stages of their lives. As a brother, John enjoyed many Holiday celebrations with his siblings and worked tirelessly to hold the family bonds together. As a husband, John devoted 51 years of marriage having shared many years of memories and love. As a father, John was proud to have been there to participate in both of his sons' graduations from college, marriage and commissioning in the US Navy. John had a passion for QVC gadgets and being a part-time weather man, always on the keen lookout for that “can't do without” kitchen tool and any foul weather that could impact your day. His other passions in life included carpentry, maintaining the family’s immaculate yard and ensuring the best prepared steaks during family cookouts. John was proud to call himself husband, father, Daddy English, and Pop Pop. John is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sherry English, his two sons, Brett Alan English and Jason Corbett English and his wife Ami, their children, Jason Jr., Evan, Luke, Lydia and Joshua; his siblings, Becky Bentley and her daughter Kim Brasfield and her husband Joel; Jimmy English and his wife Ann and their son, Patrick English; and Sharon Meadows and her children, Christy Schreckenghaust and Bryan Thompson; and his mother-in-law, Minerva Beane and many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James & Evelyn, his grandson, Evan, his father-in-law, Charles (Bud) Beane, his sister-in-law, Debbie Beane Crump, and his nephew, Phillip English. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, April 12th, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Ave. S.W. A Celebration of Life Service will be on Thursday, April 13th at 11:00 am at Elmwood Chapel. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Father Vernon Huguley of St. Stanislaus Catholic church will preside over the services.
