John Henry Schoppert, Jr. died peacefully on April 10, 2021 at the age of 81. John was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Shades Valley High School and the University of Alabama.
He served in the United States Army and other than a brief time with Drennen Motor company he established, owned, and operated R and S Truss company. John grew his business throughout the State of Alabama through honesty and integrity coupled with an admirable work ethic.
John worked with the Magic City Kiwanis Club serving as its president in 1979 -1980. He served on the board of many local charities but perhaps his greatest service to our community was his commitment to the Boy Scouts of America as the Scout master of Troop 53 for 31 years. John was an avid fisherman – he really loved to fish! He spent a great deal of his time going on fishing trips. He loved to share his skills on the best places and the best way to catch fish with his friends. No fish was safe when John was in the area.
He served as an elder at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. His service included every aspect of the church’s life and he could always be counted on for any task that needed to be done. His influence over young men during his 31 years as Scout Master will have eternal consequences. His sphere of influence in our community was immeasurable. He never met a stranger. His commitment to Christ and his unselfish willingness to help others will long be remembered. Because of his commitment to relationship with Christ John demonstrated a wonderful sense of peace and a very positive spirit. These qualities were obvious to everyone around him during his last days spent in the hospital.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen Schoppert. He is survived by countless friends too numerous to mention.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Briarwood Presbyterian Church’s mission fund or Search Ministries.
