
WILSON, JOHN CALVIN Born July 14th, 1923, died July 11, 2011 of natural causes in Spanish Fort, AL. Mr. Wilson was a life long resident of Birmingham prior to moving to Spanish Fort in 2006. Preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Jeanne Foster Wilson. He is survived by his son, John C. "Sparky" Wilson, Jr. and his wife (Mary Lynn). He has two grand children John Chapman "Chap" Wilson (Emily Sealy) of Atlanta and Emily Payne Wilson of Birmingham. His father Dr. John C. Wilson died before he was born and his mother died when he was 13. He attended Birmingham School and McCallie in Chattanooga, TN. At age 17 he enlisted in the USAF and was stationed in the mid-pacific during WWII as a Flight Engineer of a B-24. After discharge he returned to Birmingham and started John Wilson Contracting Co.. He enjoyed building lakes and underwater pipeline work and was one of the first licensed general contractors in the state with an "underwater construction" specialty. He was a deacon at Independent Presbyterian Church and served as a member of the Rocky Ridge Volunteer Fire Department for 25 years. John was also involved in the Homewood Mountain Brook Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, and Camp Cosby. His hobbies included anything to do with water sports, scuba diving, sailing, swimming and especially enjoyed time at his Lake Martin Cabin. Services will be held at Elmwood Funeral Home and Cemetery , Birmingham, Alabama on July 16th, 2011 with visitation at 10:00 AM, Memorial Service at 11:00 AM and a Graveside service following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Providence United Methodist Church, 32200 Jimmy Faulkner Drive, Spanish Fort, Alabama 36527.
