Born on September 22, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, Jonathan grew up with an insatiable curiosity and a deep compassion for others—qualities that would shape both his life and his career. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Downstate SUNY Medical School. Dr. Fratkin dedicated himself to the practice of neuropathology, where he became known not only for his clinical expertise but for the humanity he brought to every encounter.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fratkin touched countless lives. Colleagues admired his integrity and calm presence; medical students trusted him for his knowledge and expertise. His work was published in numerous medical journals. Being a doctor was more than a profession—it was a calling he fulfilled with humility and grace.
Beyond medicine, Jonathan was a man of many passions. He loved birdwatching, boating, Braves baseball, Alabama football, classical music, opera, museums, genealogy, a good sandwich, and kvetching. He and his wife, Gail Chadwick, participated in the dog show community and generated several AKC championships for their Rhodesian ridgebacks over the years. He approached each endeavor with the same thoughtfulness he brought to his work. He was a loyal friend, a generous mentor, and someone who made others feel seen and valued.
Above all, Jonathan treasured his family. He is survived by his wife, Gail Chadwick; children, Jillian (Damian) Dunn, Alex (Amy) Fratkin; grandchildren, Camille and Wheeler Fratkin; sister, Erica (Richard) Hiersteiner, brother David Fratkin (Michael Goodwin), along with nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him very much.
A Graveside Service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery, Wednesday April 1, 2026 at 11:00 AM in Block 36 600 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Birmingham, AL 35211.
