

Joe was born in Albertville, Alabama but moved to Fairfield, Alabama as a young child. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Navy in February of 1944, where he served until discharged in June of 1946.
Joe attended Howard College (now Samford University), Georgia Tech, and the University of Alabama, where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He enjoyed a 35-year career with US Steel in Fairfield, Alabama before retiring in 1983. While at UA he met the love of his life, Dorothy Elizabeth Ramey, and they were married on August 20, 1950 in Akron, Alabama. They made their home in Fairfield, Alabama until moving to Hoover, Alabama in 1994.
Joe was a longtime and very faithful member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Fairfield, Alabama. He served as treasurer for many years as well as Chairman of the Deacons, member of various search committees, Building and Grounds Committee, and many others. Joe often did a lot of behind-the-scenes service for his church and also for many members and friends throughout the years. His family describes him as a man with a generous heart.
After moving to Hoover, Alabama, Joe and Dottie joined Green Valley Baptist and continued to serve the Lord there in various capacities. In later years as they were able, they attended Hunter Street Baptist and Shades Crest Baptist.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, Gussie Reed and Otto Reed, and his sisters, Evelyn Jones and Doris Harding. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Dorothy Ramey Reed; sons Keith Reed (Carol), John Reed (Grace), and Paul Reed (Mary Jane); grandchildren Emily Butler (Zach), Jeremy Reed (Shaina), Nathaniel Reed, and Natalie Reed (Sid); and great grandchildren Zoey and August Butler, Elijah and Bennett Reed, and Jada Kennedy. Survivors also include several nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 28th at 11:00 am at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel and Cemetery (800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211), Dr. Owen Bozeman officiating. There will be a time of visitation before the service from 10:00-10:45.
