She graduated with honors from Mountain Brook High School and Duke University and received a master’s degree in education at the University of NC-Greensboro. Katherine’s early teaching was in Durham’s inner city schools. Later, her love of animals led her to other jobs, including dog training and raising alpacas.
Katherine loved to travel. She grew up visiting her mother’s family every summer at Atlantic Beach, NC. She toured Europe when in high school on a National Wind Symphony Orchestra tour. Later on, she visited Bali, Australia, and she had especially memorable trips to Hawaii and other loved beaches with her nephews Wrenn, John, and Robert. Katherine was predeceased by her parents John Wrenn and Katherine Ferebee Ramsay. She is survived by her sister Becky Ramsay Matherne, and husband Rich, of Atlanta; her brother John Ramsay and fiancée Shelley Street, of Leeds; and nephews Wrenn Ramsay and John and Robert Matherne. Aunts, uncles, and cousins are spread from eastern North Carolina to islands off Alaska.
Family and friends will gather on Saturday, February 10. A graveside service will be at 11 am at Elmwood Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rotties’N Notties Rescue at Crossroads Animal Hospital in Moody Alabama (205) 640-4327 or to ASPCA.
