

Mary Goggin Maples, whose energy, enthusiasm and humor were prized by all who knew her, died Oct. 4, 2016 in Oneonta, Al. Born on Sept. 29, 1924; she celebrated her 92nd birthday with her family, and visited with her daughters hours before she died.
Mary was born Mary Elizabeth Goggin in Shelbyville, Tenn., and grew up in Huntsville, Ala. She married her husband Bill in 1948 and moved to Birmingham in the early 1950s. She often said her daughters were her greatest accomplishment. She thoroughly enjoyed their formative years and after they entered high school, she took part-time jobs. She later delivered food for Meals on Wheels.
An active athlete, she loved tennis and played until she was 83. She also enjoyed softball and golf. Mary was an accomplished horsewoman and as a young woman, she entered her Tennessee walking horse in amateur events. She shared her love for horses with her daughters, and taught them all to ride. In 1998, she had triple-bypass surgery the day after driving herself to the hospital, having had a heart attack.
Mary and her husband were members of Faith Chapel in Roebuck. After her husband’s death in 1999, she attended Gardendale First Baptist. She was a proud lifetime member of the DAR. She is survived by four daughters, Margaret Maples of Chicago, Mary Harris (Joel) of Remlap, Cynthia Lefoy of Birmingham and Angela Smith (Tim) of Huntsville, and one sister, Kay Wood (Richard) of Hoover. Mary had five grandchildren, William Osthoff (Bree), Christopher Lamb (Christy), Jesse Lamb, Michael Lamb, and Meghan Lefoy (deceased in 2012), and three great- grandchildren, Adia Lefoy, Evan Osthoff and Macy Osthoff. Family will receive friends on Friday Oct. 7, 2016 from 1-2 pm at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. Funeral Service will follow at 2 PM with burial at Forest Hill Cemetery. Rev. J. Joel Harris officiating.
