Merle McCay

Eleanor Merle (Walker) McCay, 93, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024 in the Palliative Care Unit of Brookwood Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family and all who knew her loved her and will miss her. Merle was born November 29, 1930 in Boothton, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Wheeler McCay Jr. and by her parents Carl and Zora (Foshee) Walker and by 1 Sister and 1 Brother. She was survived by a sister, June Madden, sons Jimmy (Rita) McCay of Hoover, AL, Joe (Robin) McCay III of Odenville, AL and Danny (Marianne) McCay of Trussville, AL. She is survived by 6 Grandchildren Jason (Katy) McCay, Matthew (Allyson) McCay, Meredith (Matthew) McCay, Joseph McCay, David McCay and Sarah McCay and 8 Great-Grandchildren Walker, Eli, Hannah, Leah, Colin, Noah, Lydia and Julia along with numerous nieces and nephews. During her early years she was a devoted home maker, wife and mother who loved spending time with her family and square dancing. Once her children were grown, she worked for a time with Southern Living before retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a long-time member of Eastside Baptist Church and after moving into assisted living, she began to follow Church of the Highlands online. Funeral Services are being held Saturday at John Ridout’s in Trussville, AL followed by graveside services at Forest Hill Cemetery with Rev. John Paul Dutton officiating.
