

Michael Steve Sperando, age 61, of Birmingham, Alabama was born on June 19, 1962, and died peacefully on March 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving parents Catherine and Steve Sperando; his siblings Gina (CD) Lackey, Sarah (Roland) Burns, Sister Tonette Sperando, OSB; and other immediate family members. He was a native of Birmingham, Alabama and attended religious education classes at Nazareth House. He also attended education classes at Opportunity Center, Woodlawn High School, and John Carroll Catholic High School.
Michael was an active member of the Cathedral of St. Paul and volunteered there for almost 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father James E. Coyle Council #9862 and the 4th Degree Assembly #3238. He was also an active member of the Italian American Heritage Society.
Prior to his recent illness, Michael enjoyed dancing, singing, and participating in sports such as basketball, softball and bowling offered through the Exceptional Foundation. He always enjoyed a party or social event and attended regular gatherings at Circle of Friends and Good Neighbor. He loved spending time each summer with friends at Camp Sumatanga.
Michael will be remembered for the unconditional love he gave to everyone, a smile that lit up the room, and a hug that thoroughly warmed you. It was often said that Michael never met a stranger, but only a friend he had yet to meet. He will be greatly missed by many; yet, heaven has gained another angel watching over us all.
Michael is survived by his parents; siblings; nephews, Steven (Hayley) Lackey, Thomas (Julynn) Burns, Sean (Elizabeth) Lackey; Joseph Burns, Navy AEAN; one great-niece, EmmaGrace Lackey; three great-nephews Slade Knight, Sylas Burns, Ethan Lackey; numerous cousins; extended family and friends. The family is most appreciative for Michael’s caregivers at South Haven Health and Rehabilitation.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 21, at the Cathedral of St. Paul between 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday, March 22, at the Cathedral of St. Paul beginning at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Following Mass and lunch in the Cathedral Life Center, burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Nazareth House P.O.
