

REBECCA BOWERS COOPER, age 91, of Birmingham, passed away on April 13, 2017. April 13th was the 79th anniversary date of her confirmation at St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on November 9, 1925, daughter of the late Rebecca Laurette Bowers and Lloyd Guyton Bowers. She grew up in Forest Park and spent her childhood vacations at her beloved Sea Island, Georgia. She attended Ramsey High School in Birmingham, Hollins College in Virginia, and Parsons School of Design in New York City. Throughout her life, she was active in the civic life of her community. She was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham and several literary societies, including the Cadmean Circle and the Argus Club. For many years, she volunteered at and eventually managed the Museum Store at the Birmingham Museum of Art. She had a passion for gardening, and particularly enjoyed arranging the flowers for the Altar Guild at St. Mary’s. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Belton Y. Cooper and her sister, Mary Rockwell Bowers. Survivors include her sons Belton Cooper Jr. and his wife Debra; Lloyd Cooper and his wife Jane, grandsons Bo and Wilson; G. Spencer Cooper and his wife Heather, grandsons Maxwell and Graham, all of Birmingham. The family would like to thank caregivers Priscilla Mennefield, Tanya Mumford, Charlotte Statham and other staff members at Always Best Care, and Dr. Stuart Cohen for their loyal care and devotion. Services will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church followed by private internment at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church in the Randolph Hall Living Room starting at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests any memorial gifts be made to the Belton Y.
