

DORN, REGINALD, age 92 passed away at St Martin's in the Pines on June 29, 2012. "Reggie" was born in Newberry, Florida and moved to Birmingham as a child. He grew up during the Great Depression which made an indelible impression on his life. A graduate of Woodlawn High School, he kept in contact with a number of his classmates, attending monthly luncheons with them until he passed. He was a lifelong member of 85th Street Baptist Church (now known as Deerfoot Baptist Church in Trussville). It was there that he met his loving wife of 55 years, Christine Wycoff. He lived most of his life in the East Lake neighborhood before moving to Pinson and North Shelby County in his later years. Like many his age, he enlisted in the Army-Air Force soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone, after which he was sent to the Galapagos Islands as a cryptographer where he sent and received messages to and from the South Pacific Front. It was there that he acquired the rank of Tech Sergeant and later Staff Sergeant. Upon his return from the war, he joined the Reserves, and retired from the Alabama National Guard after 23 years of service. He worked for several years for Alabama Power in the Data Processing Department before moving to Genuine Parts Company, retiring after 40 years of service. Reggie was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Dorn; parents, Madge and Conway Dorn; brother, Conway Dorn Jr; sister Barbara Jones and son-in-law Clarence “Skip” Haun. He is survived by his sister, Frances Nelson; children Carol Haun, Vann Dorn, and Johnny Dorn (Teresa); grandchildren David Dorn, Marie Cooley (Eric), Mandy Haun and Ashley Dorn; and great-grandchildren Emma and Evan Cooley. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 from 9:30-10:30 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. There will be a graveside service at Sunrise Memorial Gardens beginning at 11 AM.
