Richard Cleve “Dicky” Mooney went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 2, 2025, at age 84. He lived a life full of love, generosity, and service to the advancement of the Gospel.
Dicky was born June 9, 1941 in Lipscomb, Alabama. He married his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Smith Mooney, on February 10, 1964.
He graduated from Jones Valley High School and attended Jacksonville State University, before enlisting to serve his country in the United States Army. Following his service, he spent 35 years working for Alabama Power, beginning as a young man on the line crew and working his way up to supervisor of the company’s Safety and Health Department.
Dicky was a faithful servant of the Lord and began his walk with Christ at a young age. He accepted Jesus as his Savior at age 11 at Union Baptist Church. There he joined the youth choir, where he fell in love with music and used his voice to sing praises to God. Alongside his brother, Jerry, he formed the Unionaires Quartet and later the Crownsmen Quartet. They recorded multiple gospel albums and traveled to churches across the southeast using their voices to proclaim the name of Jesus. He served as a Sunday School leader at Indian Springs Baptist Church before joining Hunter Street nearly 30 years ago, where he glorified God through years of missions with the Joyful Singers senior adult choir.
Dicky was preceded in death by his parents, A.M. and Mary Mooney, and his brothers, Donald Mooney and Jerry Mooney. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Mooney, as well as his daughters, Rhonda (Greg) Jenkins and Sheri (Scott) Byler, his four grandchildren, Courtney Jenkins, Katie (Hayden) Ellis, Blake Byler and Ava Byler, his two great-grandchildren, Shepherd Ellis and Cooper Ellis, his sister Nancy (Don) Hampton, and many more loving family members.
A family burial will be held the morning of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, followed by a celebration of Dicky’s life at Hunter Street Baptist Church. Visitation will begin in the chapel at 11 a.m., followed by a service at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gideons International or to the Hunter Street Baptist Church Joyful Singers choir.
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” – John 14:1-3 (ESV)
