

PHILLIPS, RICHARD LEE, age 74 of Opelika, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Janice Garrick Phillips; parents, Edwin and Marjorie Phillips; brother, Eddie Phillips; and sister, Joann Griffin. He is survived by his daughter, Judy Greathouse (Woody) of Opelika, AL; son, Lee Phillips (Kim) of Roanoke, AL; and grandchildren, Daniel Greathouse, Katie McHugh, Mollie Watson, Kana Adamson and Kalem Adamson. Richard was born in Birmingham, AL and graduated from Banks High School in 1962 then married Janice Garrick on October 13, 1962 in Birmingham, AL. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966 then worked for Phillips Oil Company along with his father and brother. This business later became Heritage Oil Company of Opelika, AL where Richard and his brother Eddie were co-owners until 1992 and he was a longtime member of Kiwanis Club of Opelika. He was a member of Woodlawn Methodist Church in Panama City Beach, FL until moving back to Opelika in 2014 when he moved his membership to Trinity United Methodist Church. He became a Stevens Minister while a member of Woodlawn Methodist and counseled many grieving widowers in the Panama City Beach area. His family will receive friends on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 5-7 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. There will be a graveside service at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, AL on Saturday, October 15, 2016 beginning at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Trinity United Methodist Church in Opelika.
