Riley Eldon Nelson

Born on January 23, 1941, in Rayville, Louisiana, to Daniel Riley Nelson and Earlene Eunice Berry Nelson, Riley never lost his deep connection to where he came from. A graduate of Louisiana State University, he carried his Cajun roots with pride, seasoning every chapter of his life with warmth, generosity, and joy.

Riley dedicated more than 30 years of his professional life to BellSouth, where he served as Regional Vice President of Personnel. Respected for his leadership and integrity, he believed that people mattered most — whether in the workplace or around his own kitchen table.

He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, Gamma Lota Chapter of Louisiana State University (1966).

Riley was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church. A man of strong faith, Riley was known to many as the life of the party. A gifted Cajun cook, Riley’s kitchen was always open, the pot always full, and the stories always flowing. Music, laughter, and good food followed him wherever he went, and no one ever left his table hungry— in any sense of the word.

Riley found special peace in Mentone, Alabama, a place he loved dearly. Whether stirring a roux, swapping stories, or simply being surrounded by family, he lived life the Cajun way — fully, loudly, lovingly, and with an open heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Riley is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ann Nelson; his children, Erik Nelson (Stacy) and Kari George (Todd); his grandchildren, Riley Yoder (Heather) and Aiden Yoder, and his granddaughters, Reagan Nelson and Blakely Nelson; and his great-grandchildren, Sabrina Yoder and Oliver Yoder, who brought him immeasurable pride and joy.

Riley will be remembered for his big personality, his welcoming spirit, his deep love for family, and the unforgettable way he brought people together. His legacy lives on in every shared meal, every gathering filled with laughter, and every story told just a little louder.

Parkinson's boxing through PD Fight Club was a source of strength and encouragement for Riley, and the program and its coach, Martin Juarez, will always be remembered with gratitude by our family.

I lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Parkinson Association of Alabama in Riley's memory.
