

Raised in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham, Bobby ran track and played football at Woodlawn High School. He was a member of Woodlawn’s 1943 Alabama State Championship Team and received a football scholarship to Auburn University. Bobby also attended the University of Alabama.
He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce ‘Tut’ Mackey in 1949, served in the United States Army 1954-1956, and served on the Birmingham Fire Department for 41 years, retiring as a Captain in 1990.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 11 of his 12 siblings and his beloved wife. He is survived by his brother, Lelus Weldon (Gail), a sister-in-law, Paula Weldon, his daughters: Joyce Freed (Peter), Teresa Manley and Sallie Freed, seven grandchildren: Bobby Hill, Jamey Thompson, Lucy Hill, Jill Lucas (Jon), John Hill, Rebecca Hernadi-Freed (Zolton) and Carter Freed, and three great grandchildren: Jack Lucas, Jenny Lucas and Leon Hernadi-Freed.
A devoted father and grandfather, he was also a loving uncle to three generations of nieces and nephews.
