Ruth S. Barrett

Ruth was the middle child of Lawrence Alexander Smith , Sr. and Ada Clementine Tilley Smith. She met and fell in love with Charles Emery Barrett while at Woodlawn High School. They were a beautiful example of love for 71 years and now the love story continues.

She and Charlie were members of Third Presbyterian Church for over sixty years and worked tirelessly in the church. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, mamaw, great mamaw and great-great mamaw. She was a loving example teaching her great-great granddaughter Emme to silk corn, shell peas, string greenbeans and either can or freeze them. Abby loved and cuddled her Mamaw and will miss Mamaw teaching her.

She was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence Sr. and Ada Smith; husband, Charles E. Barrett; daughter, Shirley Ruth Barrett Maltz; brother, Lawrence A. and wife Johnnie; sister, Doris Irene and husband Jim Kuhlman; sister in law, Pauline Barrett Lake and nephew L.A. Smith III.

Leaving us to cherish her memory daughter, Charlotte Barrett Vines (Gerald); grandson adopted and raised by them, David Martin Barrett, Sr. (Patti); grandson, Gerald L. (Jerry) Vines, Jr.; great granddaughter, Allyson Nicole Vines Eaken (Cory); great grandson, David M. (Buddy) Barrett, Jr.; great great granddaughter, Emalee Jade Keene and Abagail Grace Eaken; great granddaughter, Adrianna Marie Barrett and her 3 children. Her special daughter, Linda Ashley (Charlie).

The family would like to thank Drs. Robert & David Bryant, Precious Moments Berlinia Catlin, Angela Brown and Disaree Catlin; Oasis Hospice Cindy Clark and Jessica Jones. These wonderful girls made Mama’s last days so much better and easier for her.

Service will be held at Third Presbyterian Church 617 South 22nd Street with Rev. Richard C. Trucks officiating. The family will provide a meal before the service at 12pm. Visitation will be at 1 pm and the service will follow at 2 pm Friday September 9, 2016.

In lieu of flowers, you may give in her memory to Third Presbyterian Church, the children’s playground fund.
