Sandra, affectionately referred to as ‘Grandmomma’ by so many who loved her, was born the youngest of three children (brothers Durwood Owen and Maxwell Owen) in Montgomery, Alabama to mother Grace Jordan and father James Volmer Owen on August 28, 1943. She was married to her beloved husband, Edward Humphrey, on February 10, 1961, and they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they have four children: Douglas Humphrey Jr (Tracie) Linda Perryman (Larry), Richard Humphrey (Angel), & Becky Hudson (Timmy).
Sandra was not only a pillar of love and strength within her family, but in the community as well. So many people, both young and now old, know and love ‘Grandmomma’ and have a personal connection to the kindness she so willingly gave. She loved children dearly and believed that all kids should know the love of Jesus and a family. She nurtured countless children over the years as she babysat, both as a profession and as a service to her church family. Serving children was her greatest joy, and the love that she instilled in each child that she came into contact with will continue to make the world a better place for many years to come.
Sandra never truly retired, and during her latter years, she enjoyed babysitting her great-grand children, sitting on the front porch with her family watching the hummingbirds or chatting around the fire pit, making her family-famous big breakfasts and baking her illustrious Red Cake, and helping take care of the family home and animals.
Sandra was preceded in death by both her parents, her oldest brother Durwood, and her husband Ed. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (and their respective families), all of whom will miss her until they are reunited.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday November 29, 2023 at Jefferson Memorial Gardens beginning at 2:30 PM.
