After 89 years, long time Birmingham resident Sara Noojin Powell left this earth on December 15, 2015 to join her loving and inseparable sister Lib in their heavenly home. Sara was predeceased by her beloved mother Eloise, father William, sister Evelyn Kozeletz, sister Corrie Elizabeth Stine and brother Byron. She is survived by her brother Jonathan Powell of Orange, TX, nephew Steve Stine of Birmingham, niece Rosemary Duffey of Phoenix, AR, nieces Jane Powell and Joan Bonnington of Houston, TX, and Jennifer Eades of Amarillo, TX, and many great-nephews, great-nieces and friends. Although Sara was a person of modest means, she will be most remembered by her generosity, kindness and empathy to those in need, and as a devoted daughter who made many personal sacrifices early in her life to provide and care for her mother. Sara also served others for years as a faithful member of numerous civic organizations before a debilitating stroke significantly limited her physical activities and forced her retirement following years of dedicated service for the Woodward Iron and Alabama Power companies. Sara positively responded to that challenge, and others throughout her life, by diligently striving to improve her condition, maintaining her infectious laugh and sense of humor, and not becoming embittered or blaming others for her physical misfortune. Visitation for family and friends will be Friday evening at the Trussville Ridout Chapel from 5-7 p.m., and a graveside service will be held Saturday at Forest Hills Cemetery at 11 a.m. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any memorial gifts be made to St. Martins in the Pines, 4941 Montevallo Rd., Birmingham, AL 35210 in honor of Sara's many outstanding caregivers there during her later years.
