Sarah E. ("Betty") Barnett Cope, 85, of Huffman passed away at home on Sunday April 28. She was born in Columbiana, AL and was the youngest of James Asberry and Minnie Idella Barnett's nine children. Betty is survived by her loving husband Jerry, whom she met in 1946 when they both worked at Continental Gin in Woodlawn. Jerry and "Betty Lou", as he called her, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on March 27, 2013. Other survivors include three children; Bill Cope (Sally), Linda Banks (Robert), Judy Sharpton (Scott); 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and a large extended family. Betty will be remembered most for loving people. Certainly she loved her husband and her family dearly. Among others she loved were the members of the senior adult Sunday School class and the children she taught in Sunday School at Huffman Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 50 years. Many will remember her loving spirit from K-Mart in Roebuck where she worked for 21 years and her shopping visits to various stores in the area. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1:30 on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel. Revered Larry Smith will conduct graveside services at Forest Hill Cemetery at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Huffman Baptist Church at 700 Huffman Road, Birmingham AL 35215. The family extends its thanks to the wonderful and gifted people who cared for Betty during her illness. Thanks also to those who prayed with and for Betty as well as the family. We now rest on God's promises to Believers found in Scripture, including John 11:25-26 and 1 Peter 5:10-11.
