Sharyn was born on April 24, 1948 in New York City, New York to the late James and Bernice Menzies. She was the “first” in many aspects of life. She was the “first” born to her parents, the “first” grandchild to both her maternal and paternal grandparents, the “first” female and African American to hold the position of Vice-President and officer to the Empire State College Student Government.
Sharyn was educated in the New York City Public School System. She graduated from Empire State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Labor Relations. She used her labor relations knowledge to help others, sharing her education as well as her experience in labor laws and policies.
Sharyn was the very proud mother of four daughters: Gia, Dina, Kem, and Nicole. She instilled in them from an early age the importance of a good education to succeed in life. She was the loving grandmother to Daniel, Nitalia, Brandon, Kayla, Caleb, Kenned, and Tyler and the great-grandmother to Terence, Nariah, Tiana, Za’Layah, and Jahyir.
Sharyn was a social light who loved to attend social events, ALL AME Church events and conferences. She loved to travel, especially to Bermuda to visit family and cruises. She loved spending time with family and friends and dining at nice restaurants where she could get a good steak.
Sharyn leaves to cherish her memories: Her daughters Gia Brinson (Derek) in Atlanta, GA, Dina Sneed-Martin (Daniel) in Durham, NC, Dr. Kem Steward (Darryl) in McCalla, AL, Dr. Nicole Stokes in Glenside, PA; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 5 nieces LaShawn, Dayna, Niesha, Jeniece (Ron), and Tanya Culver, a special cousin/sister Marsha Jones (LeRoy) in Bermuda, Sister-in-Love Norma Culver, and a special friend to the end Shirrell Moore.
Lastly, loving appreciation to her caregivers Agatha, LaQuitta, Savannah, Dahlia (ATL), Rosalind, and “Her Girls” at South Haven Skilled Nursing & Rehab Camilla, Tania, Elease, Trelinie, along with her special male CNA Marcus DeVaughn who all took EXCELLENT care of her until her sunset on October 6, 2025.
