Sheryl Ann Gates

Sheryl Gates closed her Book of Life Friday February 25th at 10:32 am. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years John S. Gates III. She is also survived by her son John W. Gates, her daughter Melissa A. Hendon (John) and youngest son Paul S. Gates (Lisa). Sheryl had six grandchildren Tiffany Posey (Brad) Alexander Hendon (Amanda), Mary “Jasmine” Hendon, Lauren Gates, John “Jack” Hendon and Elizabeth Gates. Sheryl had one great grandchild Landen Posey.

Sheryl was a true nurturing soul who spent much of her childhood caring for her mother. She proudly raised her children and supported her husband while working in and out of the home. As her children grew up Sheryl studied for and successfully obtained her dental hygienist license. She also sang faithfully in many of the choirs of the churches her husband John was appointed. She had an amazing talent for melody.

Sheryl is famous for her incredible ability to grow gorgeous flowers and keep houseplants not just alive but flourishing. She made the best chili and spaghetti in the world. She loved all animals and was the savior of many turtles crossing the street and chickens dropped from passing trucks.

Sheryl will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

A celebration of life for Sheryl will be held Tuesday, March 1, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Elmwood Cemetery & Mausoleum, 600 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Birmingham, AL 35211. There will not be a public visitation at the funeral home.
