

Shirley Ann Newsome was born on November 21, 1937, to Gladys Hudgins Newsome in Springville, AL. Her pain and suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s were alleviated on October 20, 2019. Shirley Ann (Shirl) was raised in Springville, AL and graduated from Ashville High School in Ashville, AL. Shirl worked as a custodian for the Springville school system, and later for K-Mart. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and others for family and friends meant so much to her.
Shirl is survived by her three children, Reginald Lamar “Pete” Woody II, Gladys “Penny” Jenkins (Frank) of Riverview, FL, and Countess Ann Carswell (Harold) of Troy, AL, her seven grandchildren, Rashad Carswell (Glendi) of Memphis, TN, Kenya Jenkins of Tampa, FL, Jamal Carswell (D’Atra) of Chevy Chase, MD, Tunisia Jenkins of Riverview, FL, Jonathan Carswell (Anastasia) of Troy, AL, Lamar Woody (Lexi) of West Blockton, AL, and Austin Carswell of Troy, AL, and her four great grandchildren, Hannah Rose Carswell, David Jorel Carswell, Harold Benjamin Carswell, and Benjamin Michael Levi Woody, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones, and friends. Shirl is preceded in death by all her siblings, Isaac Lee Newsome Jr., Jr., Walter Lee Farrow Sr., Nellie Boyd, Earl Newsome Jr., and Sammie Lee Newsome Sr. As she become more seasoned and enjoyed the many blessings that were afforded to her in this life, she began to be known as ‘Granny’. Her energy was unforgettable, and her spirit was contagious. Shirl was an example of love and a pillar in her community.
In 2001, Shirl’s life experienced its most significant change. She became a Christian by obeying the gospel and being baptized into Jesus Christ. Shirley now lived not only for herself but for her Lord. She zealously encouraged those in the community and the church in every way that she could. Though her impact on our lives is inexpressible, it is an irrefutable fact that she will be greatly missed.
There will be a visitation on Friday evening, October 25, 2019 at Ridout's Trussville Chapel from 5 to 8 PM followed by Chapel services on Saturday beginning at 11 AM. Interment will be in Springville Community Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery.
