

Thomas E. Hunt Jr., of Birmingham, passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. Tom was born in Tuscaloosa to Thomas E. Hunt Sr. and Eleanor Abrams Hunt in October of 1937. He and his family moved to Birmingham in 1945, where he attended Avondale Elementary continuing on to Ramsay High School (’54). He received a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Auburn University in 1959, where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. He served in the US Army for two years after graduation. Tom met Lucia Nix Hunt and they were married in August of 1964. That same year, he began working for Alabama Power Company where he worked 29 years until his retirement in 1993. He was active in the National Management Association, and once served as his chapter’s president. After retiring from Alabama Power, he worked for American Lighting in Birmingham for several years.
Tom was an active member of Riverchase United Methodist Church. He was a man of integrity, compassion and generosity. Always a servant, Tom participated on many mission trips, both international and domestic. He regularly served with numerous civic and charitable organizations in Birmingham, including Sertoma (Centennial Sertoma and then Metro Sertoma), Shepherd’s Fold, the Boy Scouts, Oak Mountain Missions, Meals on Wheels, the Firehouse Shelter, and the United Methodist Center for Senior Citizens.
Tom is survived by his wife, Lucia, children Leigh (Lauren) and Susan, and his brother, Bob Hunt.
A visitation at 2pm and a memorial service at 3pm will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Riverchase United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Riverchase United Methodist Church, Oak Mountain Missions (www.oakmtnmissions.com), or Metro Sertoma (www.metrosertoma.org).
