Born New Year’s Eve 1951, he often joked the entire world celebrated his birthday every year. Tim was the 11th of 13 children and the 7th of 9 brothers. Although he was never a husband or a father, he was “Uncle Tim” to everyone he met: he dedicated his life to the Lord, his country and his family.
Raised on Irish Hill in Pratt City, Tim was a graduate of St. Catherine Grade School and John Carroll Catholic High School. He went on to attend Jefferson State Community College and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he pledged Pi Kappa Alpha.
A proud veteran, Tim retired from the Seabee Naval Reserve (the “Dixie Doers”) after 30 years of dedicated service as Electronics Technician First Class. His unit was activated and deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal for outstanding service.
Tim worked for SunGuard as a Systems Support Representative for 30 years. He was an avid gun enthusiast and made it a point to teach his siblings, nieces, and nephews the importance of gun safety. His passion for history led him to travel extensively across the United States and Europe, his favorite destination being Ireland.
Tim was a caring son, a devoted brother, and a beloved uncle. He served as a caregiver to his parents and was known for his deep loyalty, kindness, and warmth. He truly dedicated his life to his family being the father figure when called, friend when in need, and cheerleader at any event. He was everything to everybody.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Katherine Crawford Mackinaw and George and Alyce Sherman Bowers; his parents, Hugh and Margaret Alyce Bowers Mackinaw; and his siblings Hugh Jr., George, Steve, Moni, Chris, Pat, and Denis.
He is survived by his siblings Peggy, Anne, John, Mary, and Mike, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him beyond measure.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 5, 2025, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Funeral Home, followed by a Mass celebrated by Father Vernon Huguley at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service with military honors will follow at the Mackinaw family plot.
