

Tommy Edward Hill, age 85, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 25, 2025. Tommy was born August 6, 1940, in Bessemer, Alabama. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Lee Smith on September 3, 1959.
Tommy was a gifted athlete. At Jones Valley High School he played football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. He attended the University of Alabama on a baseball scholarship. After graduating from college with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree, he worked his way through law school at Cumberland School of Law including one semester coaching the Samford University Baseball team. Tommy was a member of the A-Club, Board Member of the A-Club Educational and Charitable Foundation and served on the Bryant Jordan Scholarship Committee for the University of Alabama. He was also a member of the Bulldog Club at Samford University. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Baptist Health System and Haggai International Missions organization and as a member and President of the Vestavia Hills Board of Education.
He practiced law for over fifty-eight years using his law practice as a ministry to help and serve others. Tommy was a caring and generous man with a passion for helping others and sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. He served for more than fifty years in many roles at Shades Mountain Baptist Church including as an ordained deacon, trustee, finance committee member, Sunday School director and teacher, youth leader, and as the church’s attorney. Tommy loved people and was always generous with his time as well as with his resources.
Tommy was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicki Lynn Hill. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Joyce Smith Hill. He is survived by his daughters, Ginger Hill Knight (Tim), and Angie Hill Miller (Steve) and his four granddaughters: Emily Knight, Julie Knight, Samantha Miller and Maggie Miller all of Birmingham, Alabama.
A memorial Service will be held on Monday, September 29, 2025, at 11:00 am with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. at Shades Mountain Baptist Church and a family burial at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shades Mountain Baptist Church – Make Jesus Known Missions Fund.
