Violet Gwendolyn Walker Honeycutt of Birmingham, Alabama, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 7, 2025. She was happily married to Ralph C. Honeycutt for sixty-two years, the daughter of Mack and Alma Walker, and the youngest sister of Louise Walker Plyer, Thomas Jefferson Walker, infant Buddy Boy, and Cecil, all of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Rose Honeycutt.
Violet was born on August 15, 1932, in Weogufka, Alabama. As a child, she loved school and enjoyed her family’s woods, their many natural springs, gardens, orchards, and the farm’s rabbits, geese, and beehives. She went on to study at St. Vincent's School of Nursing, graduating as Miss St. Vincent in 1953. Later that year, she enrolled in UAB's School of Nurse Anesthesia. After receiving her degree, she moved back home to work and train other nurses at Sylacauga Hospital. During that time, she met Ralph on a blind date at a New Year’s dance and soon married him, the love of her life. They moved to Anniston, Gadsden, and in 1963, transferred to Birmingham, where they settled and raised their daughter.
Violet worked at Children's Hospital of Alabama from 1972-2002, where she served as a CRNA, Chief CRNA, and Director of Anesthesia. She would tell you that her years at Children’s were the most rewarding of her career. Violet also established the nursery at Shades Crest Baptist Church in the early ‘60s and supported families with special needs children. She enjoyed gardening and attended numerous Bible studies over the years, and was known for her great gift of hospitality. If you dropped by, she loved to stop for a cup of coffee. She was dedicated to her family and many friends, and dearly loved hosting many dinner parties, open houses, and Christmas breakfasts.
Her daughter Margaret extends her deep thanks to Violet's thoughtful and conscientious nurses and caregivers, especially Natalie Lockhart, Maria Hanks, Josh Taylor, her devoted hospice nurse, Jason Cambron, Linda Davis, Ashanti Hickman, Tawny Martin, Felicia Major, and Caroline Floyd, along with her other exceptional nurses at Grandview Hospital. Violet commented during recent hospital stays that she had never received nor seen such sincere, extraordinary care. Margaret is beyond grateful for the many friends and family members who have come alongside to provide care, companionship, guidance, assistance, and concern over the last few months.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00, September 22nd, at the Hunter Street Baptist Church chapel, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, AL 35244 followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Children's Hospital of Alabama https://give.childrensal.org/give/542616/#!/donation/checkout or a charity of your choice.
