At one point in my life, Anna was my rock. We lost touch in college, I had no idea she passed. My condolences to the family and others who loved her

A few years ago, all of us in the lab were going around Bloomington and putting up flyers for a study, and Anna and I had teamed up to do our part. I'm sure the day could have been boring, but with her, the task went from required lab work to exploring Bloomington with a friend. To me, that day exemplifies the type of person Anna was -- someone kind, someone fun to be around, the kind of person where, should you see them when you walk into a room, you can breathe a sigh of relief, because you know you've got a friend there with you. Anna, I'm so grateful that I got to meet you. I hope you've found peace, and please know that you will never be forgotten.

To me, Anna was not only a classmate, but a friend that i could rely on. I remember laughing with her over a FaceTime call, when we were reminiscing about the funny experiences during IFLE. Although we never hung out very much, I knew I could rely on Anna for emotional support. She was always empathic and caring, and looked out for others. Knowing Anna has been and genuine blessing, and I hope she has found the peace that she sought for.

I had the privilege of mentoring Anna for three years while she was a research assistant during college. While I was technically her graduate mentor, she taught me just as many important lessons about life as I taught her about science. I remember how excited and energized she was to learn when I first began working with her; she dove right into learning new methods and literature, giving a presentation in front of her peers and colleagues before even starting college. She somehow managed to find the more tedious research tasks interesting, expressing how every small effort is a big contribution to science and showing her enthusiasm to be part of the lab. I also appreciated Anna’s ability to share what was in her heart, both the joys and pains of life. Anna was sweet, compassionate, quirky, intelligent, hardworking, and thoughtful. It pains me to think that those who loved her won’t be able to see her face light up again, but her smile will live on in our memories.

I've been trying to figure out what to say for the last few days. Anna and I worked together. We only knew each other for about 6 months. Every day I worked with her was a blessing. She always knew how to make me laugh. She was such a hard worker, and I knew she would do wonderful things in the future. She always studied hard, even at work. I've been looking at the entrance at work waiting for her to show up, but she'll never be there again.

Anna, I'm going to miss you so much! I was just laughing at home thinking of the times you made me laugh and all the quirky jokes you'd tell. I really am going to miss you... Rest in peace sweet friend <3

Hi, Anna. How I wish if I can get chance to know you in some other way. This breaks my heart. I took a walk in this starry night. You and your smiles occupy my heart and mind. It was a beautiful night.  The lights may dim for a human eye, but they are strong enough to make through darkness and shine through the time. These lights may never know where they reached, but at this moment these lights encouraged me to embrace my feeling. So here I am.

As physical beings, the distance between you and I are not that close.  Our paths crossed in a mysterious way. I am one of many many students your parents instructed.  I met you occasionally during our department annual picnic, but we never made acquaintance.  The information about you reached out to me just like the starlight, not by design, not by intend, but naturally mysteriously sent and received.  In my third year of PhD, I became a mom to a baby girl named Emma. This new “mom” role made me very eager to learn and exchange “mom-daughter” information with Prof. Xiaochun on all kinds of occasions, such as in the restroom, in the hallway, next to microwave when we warm up lunch.  My version of Anna was formed up with all these pieces by piece information I got from small talks: I know once upon a time you like pb&j sandwich, I know you are very good at skating, I know you are passionate about art, and I know your bus route to school was very long, such and such, piece by piece. At that time, such little pieces of information about you can warm my heart,  can brighten my day. It reminds me that I don’t need to be scared, it reminds me there are similarities between people, it reminds me that besides math and statistics, there are love and understanding.    

No matter where you are at this moment, I am sure you know that you were, you are and you will always be supported by a lot of love.  All kinds of love, including a piece from me and my family.

I met Anna 11 years ago when she was playing with her little sister in a park. I thought to myself, how beautiful these children are! Being her parents' friend, I got to hear many fun stories about her and saw her grow into a beautiful young lady inside and out. Whenever Xiaochun brought Anna to my house, Anna was  always very polite. She was patient with the younger kids and took care of them very well. I am the kind of person who feels awkward talking to children as I don't know what to say. But not with Anna. She has the  ability to make people around her feel comfortable.  

Anna, I miss your beautiful smile. You are always in my heart. I hope you have found peace. Someday I hope to see you again and listen to you playing viola.

Every interaction I had with Anna, from high school to IU, left a smile on my face. Anyone who knew Anna knows what a special person she was. Her kindness and genuine character were evident from the moment you met her. I especially remember in high school that she was so herself, day in and day out—someone so refreshing and such a pleasure to spend time around. My heart goes out to the Li-Harezlak family, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. 

Though I knew Anna in high school, I really got to know her summer before our freshman year of college. I remember her not only being very friendly and kind, but also as an extremely genuine person. She wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable and share her own experiences and always cared about the well being of others. She always asked how my day was, and listened as I explained mundane events. 

You could tell she was extremely driven-working in lab, challenging herself with coursework-but also managed to take time out of her schedule to catch up with friends. We managed to catch up at the beginning of this school year, and I can honestly say I loved talking with her. 

Anna-we miss you. I hope you’ve found peace. <3

Anna was such a pleasure to have in the office. She was always so kind and we looked forward to talking with her about school and life. Praying for comfort during this very difficult time.

We firstly saw Anna when we met Xiaochun and Jarek's family at our friend's house. She was a quite girl, with a bright smile. We were amazed that she spoke Chinese very well. During the conversation with her, we knew she has lots of hobbies, including ice skating and drawing. Even though we left Indiana several years ago, her mom still kept updating us Anna's artworks. We are so enjoyed looking at her artworks, from which we can see brilliant dreams and hopes a beautiful girl has. She used her artistic talent and skill to motivate others, as she always did for the people surrounding her.

Anna, we will miss seeing your beautiful smile, but we know you are always here, in our hearts. We pray that your soul finds peace.

I first met Anna in the second semester of introductory Chinese in 2019. She asked for my number so that I could help her with physics the following Fall semester, but I could tell she was lying since she was always a bad liar. Ever since our first date when I saw her give a speech in Chinese and we walked around campus talking, we either talked or saw each other every day for the next few years. Even though I tried to keep my cool, it was nice having someone talk to me every day and ask me how I was feeling.  I wish I only expressed more often how much everything she did meant to me. Knowing that Anna would be home every day I would come home from school comforted me and gave consistency to my life.  Anna was also full of surprises, and there was never a dull day with her. The day she decided to purchase her husky Arbuz out of the blue is one such example. But Anna was also incredibly hardworking. When she did something, she would always finish it. When she got Arbuz, she worked as much as she could to pay for all the fees that come with owning a dog. How she was able to balance school, work, and her social life is still a mystery to me. It's difficult knowing that I won't receive any more late-night texts or phone calls from Anna. That I won't be able to watch any more movies or TV shows with her. That she won't be able to throw any more surprises at me. Anna has been my entire world for the last few years. Everything around me reminds me of the times I spent with Anna, and its difficult finding joy in these same activities. Knowing how kind and compassionate Anna was, I know she would want me to be strong and try to be happy. Right now though, it's just so hard and I feel like a piece of me is missing. I can already tell that I will be spending the rest of my life trying to make peace with life without her. I love you Anna, and I know that I will carry you with me for the rest of my life.

Anna was one of the kindest people I had the pleasure of knowing. She was there for me during the hardest times of my life, she cheered me on, and believed in me. She was a beautiful person, inside and out.  She was always there for her friends, and strangers. She was always there for everyone, she did so much for this world. She really was a good person. We had so much fun joking around in Chinese class, she even would study with me on zoom so I wouldn’t be alone. It made studying a lot more fun.  I hope that she is at peace now. May her memory be a blessing. 

Anna was and still is the first friend I ever had. We smiled and enjoyed life as young kids in Boston - memories I will cherish and remember forever. Friends by chance thanks to our fathers, but friends for life that kept in touch no matter the distance separating us. I extend my condolences to the Li-Harezlak family and will keep everyone in my prayers.
Rest In Peace Anna, and I hope to see you again someday. 

I have known Anna since she was a little sweet girl with a heart-felt warm smile. Over the years that smile has not changed a bit. It has been engraved in my memory symbolizing her passion towards people surrounding her. She was a lovely daughter, caring sister and cordial friend.  
Anna’s life journey is short but nothing short of extraordinary. Her genuine passion in helping others and persistent pursuit of a better self have won her great gratitude and admiration.

When I was thinking about what to write about Anna, the image of a comet travelling the starry night came to my mind.  A beautiful sight to anyone who looks up, it stands out from the other celestial dots, fills everyone with awe, and we know that have witness something extraordinary. And then it disappears, just to continue its journey in other skies.  Anna’s journey in this World has finished and will miss her tremendously but we are blessed for having had her in our lives if only too briefly. Our faith assures us that she is in a better place and our paths will once again cross in the eternal Peace.

When I first met with Anna at Xiaochun and Jaroslaw's place ; she was in her early elementary years. I did not have kid of my own at that time; so meeting and socializing with a kid wasn't natural for me at the beginning.  Anna made it not just natural, but pleasant. She told me about her school, how she got into student council as the youngest contender, and what's her plan to take bigger responsibility next year. Of course, we also talked about nails and arts.  Anna asked me a lot of questions on that day, questions from a 7 year old girl to a 30 year old girl, This caring, observing, inquisitive, intelligent, and very pretty young lady got my heart right away and for many many years to come.  

Anna, you are a beautiful young lady inside and out. You have the coolest, most supportive mom and a loving family. You have secret admirer like myself, who looked at you holding your viola and wowed by your talent and elegance.

     I knew Anna for only a short time, but in that brief time I knew her to be thoughtful, extremely intelligent, and an all around interesting person. We talked about a variety of things - Chernobyl being one of them. I remember one of our last conversations she was telling me about her early teenage years and something that she went through because she thought it would help me with my son. I told her how much I appreciated her sharing that with me. 
     I am very saddened by her passing and my thoughts and condolences go out to her family.  Her life was too short and she will be missed. 

Anna was my very first and very best friend I made at IU. We met in Chinese class and I was so nervous because it was my first time in college level Chinese and I didn’t know anyone so I felt very out of place. I will never forget how welcomed Anna made me feel, and I will forever cherish our friendship. I remember cheering each other on to study for the MCAT,  getting pastries at the IMU, and walking Arbuz together near her house. She truly made my college experience so much better and was one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met. She was so hardworking and she inspired me to be a better person, and I will miss sharing jokes with her and hearing her beautiful laugh. She was someone I always knew I could talk to and I will miss just having fun together; one of my favorite memories of her was when we got frog friendship rings together and just goofed around taking pictures in the cold last winter. I don’t know anyone else who’s as vibrant as Anna; she was a joy to be around and I hope she is happy and at peace now. 

Anna was one of my first friends at IU. We met during a summer research program before our first year of classes. Even though we were both brand new college students, I immediately felt welcomed by her. Anna had such a strong sense of empathy and warmth for the people around her. 

We became pen pals after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I so enjoyed receiving her letters and hearing about the life she led. On days when her heart was heavy and she was balancing more than a typical person could handle, she was still so open and willing to share the burden of others’ struggles. She made my lonely days much less lonely.

I took this photo of her a few days after we met. I will miss seeing her laugh and her beautiful smile. I feel deeply privileged to have called her a friend.

I first met Anna when she was just a young girl. Her parents, Xiaochun and Jarek,  brought to the ceremony when my wife and I got married. She was so beautiful, quietly observing what was going on around her. 
They moved away for a while but after they moved back I had dinner with her family on a number of occasions and got to know her as a teenager. I always enjoyed her lovely, intelligent company.
The last time we met was a bright, sunny day in Bloomington when we happened upon her and a friend eating lunch. It was no doubt awkward for her being approached by her parents' friends but she was ever so gracious and greeted us warmly.
I can hardly write these words for crying as I mourn the loss of Anna and grieve for her family, who loved her without measure.

We will miss sweet dear Anna so much! I knew Anna when she was a toddler. She was the best friend of my daughter Michelle.  They were together all the time. The laughter, giggling, running, jumping and her beautiful big eyes are filled in my memories. Anna, you are an angel to the people around you, now you are going to heaven! Rest in peace. Thank you for giving so much on earth. We love you forever!

When I first met Anna, she was that little cute girl riding on her Dad's shoulders to join us at Harvard Square for a lunch meeting.  She was always so sweet and lovely.  She showed her artistic talents at a very young age. We sometimes teased her that our little Anna should give us aunties clothes matching guide. 

Anna was such a proud big sister. When we gathered to celebrate her sister's 2 years old birthday, I said, Anna, your sister is such a cute baby. Anna corrected me so proudly, no, she is no longer a baby, she is a toddler! Anna was so excited about moving back to Indy, her birthplace.

When we met again in the summer of 2013 in Montreal, Anna had grown into a big girl.  But immediately I recognized the same loving and caring Anna! She and Sofia played with my toddler daughter so well, months later my daughter was still asking me when can we meet with Anna and Sofia again?

Anna, do you know Auntie has the same birthday as you? We should have celebrated together.  Auntie is still not good with clothes matching yet, and could certainly benefit from your guide.  You never left us.  You stay with us in our fond memories.







We have known Anna for years. She was kind, sweet and talented. Every single time when I talked with her, she always always gave me her quiet and charming smiles.

 She was the big sister for both her younger sibling and my girls. They played together. Also, sometime, Anna was watching them fighting.  

Anna spoke Chinese. She even created a mini show in Chinese and posted it on YouTube. Her English style Chinese makes me and her mom laugh. 

Anna was a talented artist. She had her self-designed collections. All the designs are so unique and creative. Today I visited her website. This makes me missing her so badly.

Anna, your aunt Bai and uncle Liu deeply miss you.

Anna and I spoke only briefly in Anatomy A215 - but as her instructor, I was impressed with Anna's maturity, organizational skills, and her drive.  I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing.  My heart breaks for Anna's family, and my thoughts go out to you during this time.  I am so very sorry!


I've know Anna since she was a newborn baby.  Xiaochun and I used to take her for walks in her stroller. She loved to see the cat in a window on Mass Avenue.  
She came to our wedding when she was 4 years old in a beautiful princess dress.  I watched her grow into a beautiful, kind and caring woman who was profoundly loved by her family.   

Words cannot express the deep sadness I feel for Xiaochun, Jarek and Sofia.  

We will miss you forever Anna.

Anna was a beautiful and talented girl. Most importantly she had a beautiful heart. May she rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Li-Harezlak family 


I met Anna at the beginning of this school semester at IU, and I thought she was the coolest person I'd ever met... And I still do. I hadn't known Anna for long, but I am so genuinely thankful to have even had the pleasure of meeting her. She was so intelligent, kind, funny, lovely, and wonderful. I can't remember a time that I wasn't smiling when I was with her. She was always willing to listen and help a friend. I just wish that she could've seen what everyone else saw... How beautiful she was inside and out. 

My heart aches for her family and for the friends that knew her even longer than I did.

I met Anna when I had just graduated high school. My first impression lasted the entire time I knew her. She was kind, intelligent, sweet and one of the brightest souls I will ever encounter. 

We spent so much time together this summer walking Arbuz and getting ice cream. We’d sit by the river Jordan and talk about everything and anything. There was never a conversation I had with her that wasn’t deep and comforting. Back in Freshman year we would have similar talks at the IMU. The best friends are always the ones that you can listen to forever and never get bored. 

I left for Ireland in August and Anna gave me a going away present. I still carry the notebook around with me. I’ll never forget the impact that she had on my life and I can only hope that I had a similar one on hers. 

I love you and miss you Anna. Forever and always. ❤️

Anna was my coworker and friend. Her friendship and kind spirit has brought laughter and joy to my life and it will never be forgotten. I first met Anna ten years ago on my first day of 6th grade at Creekside Middle School. I was a shy and awkward kid but over time Anna changed that. She was the person who got me to come out of my shell. We became close friends and shared countless memories and laughs from things like shared classes, birthday parties, orchestra, and bonding over our mutual love of cute animals, to long talks on the phone and deep conversations about our journeys down the pre-medical career path. Anna was one of the most warm and genuine people I’ve ever known. I’m reserved by nature, but Anna was one of the rare few people I felt I could always be myself around and share anything with. Even if we went long spans of time without seeing each other because life got in the way, when we met up again it was always as though nothing changed. 

Anna was a true friend. Her caring personality, intelligence, empathy, and inner strength made her such an amazing person. I’m so lucky to have been friends with Anna over the past ten years. She changed my life for the better, as I’m sure she touched the lives of so many others. My heartfelt condolences go out to the Li-Harezlak family.

I’ll always remember our friendship, Anna. May you rest in peace.


A picture of the day I first met this wonderful and beautiful young woman in June of 2018. We were in the same summer program for college and for some reason we managed to develop a friendship that created 3 of the most important and transformative years of my life. 

I have been lucky to be able to see many different parts of Anna over the years, but one part that will always stand out is that of her true sweetness and warmness, as well as her enormous inner fortitude that made me feel as if I had a younger sister and a strong companion alongside me to experience our life journeys together. I hope others can experience the type of fulfillment that Anna gave to all her friends here at IU as it is a precious and fleeting gift of life.
