

Donald Eugene Smith, 79, born January 24, 1936, of Bloomington went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 28, 2015. He passed peacefully at the Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years Beverly (Wright) Smith, sons Brian Smith, Gregory (and Misti) Smith, and daughter Cindi Smith, along with his brother, Michael James (and Diane) Smith. Donald had 4 grandchildren- Lyndsi (and Ricky) Bennett, Chelsey (and Phillip) Turentine, Evan Smith, and Ethan Smith. He was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren- Christina Rose White, and Kaden Estil Bennett and Dafni Annika Bennett. Donald was preceded in death by his parents James Walter and Shirley Catherine (Sims) Smith.
Donald graduated from Bloomington High School in 1954 and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He officiated High School basketball and IU Basketball Scrimmages under Bob Knight. He also officiated Big Ten and High School baseball along with Varsity High School Football for 16 years. Don ran the chains for IU Football home games. Don retired after 33 years at Detroit Diesel Allison Engine Gas Turbine Division of General Motors in Indianapolis. He was the Manufacturing Supervisor and in charge of Quality Control and final inspection of the C1 30 engines. He also delivered auto parts at CarQuest for Bill Carpenter for 23 years part time. He enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota with his family, golfing, and spending time with family and friends. Don was a loyal, dedicated, and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He always cherished his relationships with others with a selfless heart.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home; 4150 E. Third St. with Pastor Kim Norris officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday (03/03) from 5-8 p.m. and on Wednesday (03/04) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
