

Survivors include his wife, Roxie A. Mathis of Solsberry; his children Evalou Mathis-Kelley (James Kelley) of Bloomington, Julie Mathis of Solsberry, James (Erin) Mathis of Williams, and Danny (Jozi Deckard) Mathis of Bloomington; grandchildren, William Head of Evansville, Karli Harden of Bloomington, Leslea Lindsey of Bloomington, Tyler (Angel Ray) Verhines of Solsberry; Jessica McGee of Louisiana; Salem Hodges of Bedford, Emily Mathis of Bedford, James Mathis Jr. of Williams, Joshua Mathis of Williams, Zoe Mathis of Ellettsville, and Kindra Mathis of Ellettsville; great-grandchildren, Bella Harden of Bloomington, KJ Douthitt of Bloomington, DJ Douthitt of Bloomington, Eli Douthitt of Bloomington, Lennox

James was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, David Milton Mathis and John “Buddy” Mathis; sisters, Rosabell “Bell” Henderson, Edna “Boot” Jones, and sister, Helen “Sissy” Mathis.
James was a great husband, father, and grandpa who provided for and took care of his family. He was a hard worker; he spent 32 years at General Electric, Tie Yard (Clear Creek), Victor Oolitic Quarries of Bloomington, IU, Eastern School in Greene Co., and May’s Greenhouse.
James loved the outdoors, fishing, Nascar racing, hunting, cutting/splitting wood, camping, and cookouts with family and friends—laughing and cutting up. He was a giver for sure. He loved fellowship.
James is loved by many and will be missed by many.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 28th, 2023 from 9am-1pm at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home (4150 E. 3rd Street, Bloomington, IN 47401). A funeral service will be held at 1pm with Pastor Bruce Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg.
