John George Costas

BLOOMINGTON — John George Costas died unexpectedly on October 3, 2017, in Golden Living Center in Bloomington. He was born in Bloomington, to the late George and Katigo (Lambros) Costas on February 18, 1937.

John graduated from Bloomington High School in 1954. He earned Master’s degrees in both Math and Bacteriology. He worked at the doctoral level on advanced research in Microbiology at Indiana University.

John was a scientist and student of social movements. He was an ardent humanist and activist for world peace throughout his lifetime.

John is survived by his sister, Nitsa (Costas) Williams and her husband, Cy Williams of Bloomington; and two nieces, Krisahn Leichter of Carmel, IN, and Khea Glynn of Manhasset, NY.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Christopher Costas; and his sister, Georgia (Costas) Kneese.

Friends may call on the family on Friday, October 6, 2017, from 10-11 a.m. at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E. Third St., Bloomington, Indiana 47401, with the funeral service following at 11 a.m. Fr. Peter Gillquist officiating from All Saints Orthodox Christian Church.

Burial will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
