John Eric DeVerter, 63, of Spencer died unexpectedly in his home on Saturday, July 25, 2020. He was born June 8, 1957 in Kokomo, IN to Malcolm Paul DeVerter and Nancy Opal Sullivan DeVerter. He was a Weld Engineer with Major Tool in Indianapolis. Survivors include his wife, Debra Shaw DeVerter of Spencer; his father, Malcolm (Peggy) Paul DeVerter of Lawrence; his mother, Nancy Hays of Terre Haute; two daughters, Rubie (Jordy Minnick) DeVerter and Nico (fiancé David Deatrick) DeVerter both of Spencer; a son, Gus (Katelyn Osborne) DeVerter of Spencer; a brother, Joe (Terri) DeVerter of Terre Haute; a sister, Kimberly McKay of Lawrence; a step brother, Ty Stakes of Singapore; a step sister, Lee Stakes of Florida; two step sons, James Pitzulo of Franklin and Daniel Pitzulo of Martinsville; a step daughter, Renee Pitzulo of Greenwood; 8 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his step father, Horace Hays; and a brother in law, Duane McKay. John was a U.S. Navy Veteran, he enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, art, raising chickens, welding, carpentry, painting and cooking. John absolutely loved being a husband. He adored his children. He noticed hidden qualities in those around him and brought out the best in everyone. He was caring, genuine, and kind. He was known at Major Tool for being a strong mentor. John was proud of his garden and his community. He also loved music especially that of John Prine and Tom Waits. There are no services planned at this time.
