John grew up in Indianapolis and attended Broad Ripple High School where he became focused on music. John won the state piano contest his senior year but went on to study classical guitar at Indiana University Bloomington, the following year. The next several years, he toured the US and Europe teaching master classes as part of a guitar duo with his friend, Paul Cox.

A bachelor until then, John inherited three teenage step-children. Over the years, along with those children and their spouses, this has resulted in a family that includes 5 grandchildren and their spouses; and now 8 great grandchildren.
In 1986, John attended a worship service and heard a sermon by a Texas preacher, Dee Bowman, that further changed his life. He was baptized into Christ a few weeks later.
During the years from 1984 until 2018, John worked for IBM and then Cummins in Columbus, Indiana.
After his retirement, he began preaching at West Second Street Church of Christ in Bloomington, Indiana, where he continued until his hospitalization on November 29 just a few weeks ago.
John was preceded in death by his parents and step-son, Jeff Whittington.
