

Lexie Hurl Mills, 96 of Bloomington died Saturday May 2, 2015 in Bell Trace Health and Living with his family by his side. He was born May 31, 1918 in Switz City to Hurl Mills and Fannie Miller Mills. He was a long time Educator and Coach in Indiana High Schools.
Survivors include two daughters, Bette Jeanine Mills Martin and her husband Allan of Pekin and Michele Mills-Hacker of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Susan Martin Sokeland and her husband Justin, Michael Martin and his wife Sherri, Joel Martin, Jennifer Martin Goen and her husband Jeremy and Elena Hacker Isenhower and her husband Jon; nine great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Herbert Laymon of Indianapolis; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Mildred Marie Laymon Mills; and five brothers and sisters, Daisy Conklin, Ralph Mills, Clair Mills, Pansy Hays and Druen Mills.
Memberships include, 1st Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, the American Legion, Burton Woolery Post #18, the Indiana State Teachers Association, Monroe County Retired Teachers Association, 50 year Member of the I-men, I.U. Alumni Association, the I.U. Varsity Club and the International Order of Odd Fellows. Lexie served his country during World War II in the Amphibious Forces of the U.S. Navy piloting LCT’s and was involved with the landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. As an Educator, Lexie taught drivers education, business and accounting classes and coached athletics for 43 years having taught in Columbia City, Campbellsburg, and Pekin before settling in Bloomington where he taught at Bloomington High School South and then Bloomington High School North when it opened. Having lettered in Track during his college days at I.U., Lexie remained a big I.U. Basketball and Football fan.
Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, May 8, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. in Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E Third St., with Reverend Helen Hempfling officiating. Entombment will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens with Military Honors given by the Monroe County Honor Guard. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 2:00 – 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
