Matilda Jane Hopkins
February 14, 1916 – September 13, 2010
Matilda Jane (Norris) Hopkins (AUNT TILLIE) age 94 of Bloomington, IN, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 13, 2010, at Bloomington Hospital.
Born February 14, 1916, in Bloomington, IN, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Dora (Evans) Norris.
Matilda was one of the first African Americans to graduate from Bloomington High School now known as Bloomington High School South. At a young age, she professed her faith in Christ and was a very faithful, dedicated, life-long member and matriarch of Second Baptist Church Bloomington, Indiana.
Matilda was a devoted employee of Indiana University and retired after 25 years of service, working for the late Chancellor Herman B Wells. Renowned for her beautiful hats and for her awesome culinary skills, Aunt Tillie has fed thousands.
She is survived by one son James (Louise) Hopkins of Bloomington, IN; one sister, Wilma Norris Holmes of Cleveland, OH; six grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Rodney (Pamanita) Hopkins, Santa Ana, CA; Marcia (Andre) Pickett, Bloomington, IN; LaDonna (Calvin) Fletcher, Beltsville, MD; Vatonia (Keith) Gray, Cordova, TN; Matthew (Shannon) Morris, Tallahassee, FL; Tracy (Chris) White, Las Vegas, NV. She is also survived by twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her faithful caregiver, Lenora Hopkins, Bloomington, IN; one sister in-law, Marie Norris, Greencastle, IN; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
In addition to her parents, Matilda was preceded in death by one daughter, Faye Lynn Hopkins; and five brothers: Charles E. Norris, Paul E. (Lavenia) Norris; Richard E. (Catherine) Norris; Frederick E. Norris and William E. Norris.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Second Baptist Church. Friends may visit the family at Day Funeral Home on Friday, September 17, 2010, from 5-8:00 p.m.
