Peggy Lou (Mathis) Etter

Peggy L. Etter, age 95, of Bloomington, passed away on August 10, 2025. She was born in Bloomington, IN to Grace (Clay) and John W. Mathis. She was a 1948 graduate of Bloomington High School. Peggy was employed by Indiana University Halls of Residence for many years.

Peggy and her husband, Richard, loved to travel and enjoyed many car and train trips across the United States, with a special fondness for the western U.S. Their journeys often included Peggy’s sister, Esther, and her husband, Lee Slaughter, who was a Navy buddy of Richard’s from World War II.

Peggy married Richard D. Etter in 1948 in Bloomington. Richard preceded her in death in 2012. The couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on October 2, 2012.

She is survived by three sons: Richard Jr. (Deborah), Timothy J., and Kevin L. Etter; one daughter, Nancy J. Etter; one sister, Esther Slaughter of Westland, MI; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel F. Etter, and an infant daughter, Debra L. Etter.

A visitation will be held on August 15, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a service following, at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 East Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401. Burial will take place at Clear Creek Cemetery.
